when only the best will do

Are you one of those people that loves to sing along with radio ads?!

Didn't think so.

But for those who are, here's a CD full of them.
Golden tunes like Happy Little Vegemite, Aeroplane Jelly, Benson and Hedges, Toyota - Oh What A Feeling, Nigger Boy Soap Pads (seriously), and Hard Yakka.
Surely you'll want this on repeat on a long car trip.

sweet dreams. darling.

Hubby found this on Amazon.com (heaven knows what he was looking for!)

But with chapters like;

"Your upstairs neighbour kills people"

"I said not to touch that"

and

"No, it isn't just the wind",

it's sure to be a big hit with the littlies.

i knew it.

I knew it. All those Elvis conspiracy theorists/enthusiasts/sightings couldn't be wrong...

This 'Where's Wally?'-esque children's book immediately appealed to my warped sense of humour.
And I laughed harder when I saw this:

don't you hate that?

So relatable. Or is that just me...

judgement day

Look I have to draw your attention to www.judgeabook.blogspot.com.au for their outstanding contribution to the discovery of WTF books.

I mean with such gems as...

...you can see my argument here, right? I mean this is A1-quality weirdness. Bravo.

save my place

As a librarian, we see some really beautiful bookmarks. Occasionally they get left behind in library books, and there's always a designated box/container in every library around of lost and unclaimed bookmarks. Some are precious and detailed, some are hand made by children or friends, some are yellowing dog-eared pictures of relatives or far away places...

However, sometimes, mid-book, a book mark is just not handy, so readers need to improvise. And here's the rub. Sometimes we find things in books that are just down right weird, gross and unsuitable bookmarks.

So I've compiled a list of clever improvised bookmarks I've seen, and WTF bookmarks, that I definitely never want to see again.

CLEVER:
reciept
fourleaf clover (pressed & dry)
paper clip
tea bag (unused! Of course!)
elastic band
train ticket
hair pin
photo
postcard
gumleaf

EEEEW WTF?! NO!
sultana
slice bacon
toilet paper (where were you reading???)
wet wipe
hair (human. I think.)
orange rind
condom (unopened, but still! :S )
needle (Ow! oh, where did that go...?)
band aid (nope, not in packet.)

(Yep - that's a real book.)

it's world breast feeding week!

There is SO much good information about breast feeding at your local library and ours always provides a safe, quiet place for Mums to nurse.

Check out your local library or BookTARDIS - there are so many good parenting and breast feeding books out there!

This probably is not one of them though.

What?! That's not...! I mean surely that can't be a real...? I don't even...

2012 eclectic reader challenge: march - literary fiction (take 2)

Incase you missed it, the genre for January was actually literary fiction, but I stuffed up and read a romance instead. Sothis month I read a literary fiction text to make up for it! (whoopsie)

Imagine what would happen if Mary Poppins arrived on the set of 'Deliverance'.

That pretty much sums up this story, a satirical dig at the Victorian fiction genre,  about educated and civilized Flora, who goes to stay with her backward - inbred?! - cousins the Starkadders at their farm Cold Comfort Farm. I was constantly snorting and giggling at this ridiculous little story, where characters have names such as 'Caraway' and 'Mybug', the cows just randomly lose limbs without anyone's notice, and the family matriarch keeps the whole farm under her control by feigning madness from having seen 'something nasty in the woodshed' (no, you don't find out what!) :S

Think Edgar Allen Poe meets James Herriot. And then throw in Pollyanna. Couldn't help but giggle. I gave it 4/5 on Goodreads.

more aussie than an outdated stereotype

I wish I'd known about this book on Australia Day! (And all those countless other days!) All that time I was sitting around thinking: "I wanna make a cake... I want it to be patriotic, but not obvious. I want it to say "Australia", but not in a modern, artistic, or indeed even obviously edible way...?"

Behold!

Because I know y'all have always wanted to make an edible

...VICTA mower...

...Tuckerbox (Of course u cant eat the dog! Because that'd be weird.)...

...Akubra...

...Caravan! (I dont know how many times I've wanted to make a caravan cake...)...

...Meat pie with patriotic sauce! (Imagine! An edible meat pie!)...

...Billy (complete with gumleaf and soggy tea bag accessories)...

...Hills Hoist! (What? You can only eat the patch of lawn?! Disappointing!)...

...Weber-Que! (You call those sausages 'done'? That's not nearly enough charcoal for a true Aussie barbie! And where's the proverbial 'shrimp'?)...

But seriously, all joking aside, there are some cute Aussie animal cakes in this book - just look at this sweet little spearmint-leaf salt water croc!!! OMG he's ADORABLE!!!

"C'mere! C'mere, you cute little...naaaw look at that: he's gnawing my leg off! Aww! Look he's doing a cheeky little death-roll and dragging me under the surface! Squee! Someone get the camera!!!"

unless u hav musophobia (fear of mice)

Found this children's book "Little Mouse's Big Book Of Fears" and thought it was worth a post. It's designed to be used as a scrapbook where kids can express their fears and explore them, on the premise that "A fear faced is a fear defeated".

ie Ailurophobia: Fear of cats.

But... um... some of these pages are quite... dark. And a bit disturbing. In fact it wouldnt surprise me if ur kids developed a few more phobias after reading this one! O.O

Hydrophobia: Fear of water.

Aichmophobia: Fear of knives

Clinophobia: Fear of going to bed.

zombie friday!

Don't you hate it when books have disappointingly misleading titles?

Example:

!!! OMG The Navy are all the Undead??? Whoa this is....

...oh.
Oh, okay, I see what you did there. Yeah so its a metaphor cause the myths wont... yeah, I see.
Hmm. *disappointed*
WELL! No matter! Cause I present to you...

Awww!!! Look at little zombie dog grave robbing a little cuddly dead bone!!!

Cute little zombie grommet!

"Zombie ducky, you're the one..."

And finally...

Now that's just adorable. X)

extreme frugality

No one's more respected in the world of home-cookery than the Country Women's Association. These are women who know how to be domestic, productive and frugal. The proof of which lies in their cookbook:

Why would I feature this as a 'wtf book'? Well, there's frugality, and there's...

And of course, there's the ever popular...

I don't even wanna know what's in the

Or the

Or

Eek O.o

But what's really bizarre is, if this was a book published in the depression.. in post-war ration days, it would make more sense. But no:

And therefore, I cant help but wonder how applicable some of these recipes will be to a modern audience...? Although with the cost of electricity and fuel going up and up... SO. Just in case: Here are some helpful hints:
